5 a day the easy way

So…ever heard of green smoothies?  My first experience with a green smoothie was when I was 8 years old. We knew this verrrrry holistic couple who did weird things like brush the dead skin cells off their bodies in public places and bounce on exercise trampolines in the middle of parking lots ( I guess cause they kept a tramp in the car?? why not?).  Sound familiar to anyone? Anyway, I think they put anything green in it- broccoli, zucchinni, lettuce, peppers, etc. and then added 1/4 cup of pineapple juice.   Throw it in the blender and VIOLA- nastiness in a glass! Of course I hated it as an 8 year old and pretty sure I could down it now, but it would be hard.

So a few years ago, my mom introduced me to these awesome spinach smoothies and I am addicted!  When I am not super hungry for breakfast or lunch, I make one of these babies and it fills me up and makes me feel fabulous! Here’s the basic recipe:

1 BIG handful of spinach- like fill the blender almost to the top

1/2 cup orange juice

blend it up til it’s nice and smooth.

1 banana

1 cup frozen berries

Blend. THAT’S IT! Easy right???

This makes a big blender full, and I usually only drink 1/3 or 1/2 of it and save the rest for the next day.  This is such a quick and easy way to get all your fruits and veggies for the whole day.  I have been having a lot of fun with it too- I’ve been adding Kale, beets, collard greens, nuts, flax seed, cucumbers, carrots, peaches, oranges, blueberries, etc.  Anything!  I swear it is delicious. My husband can’t get enough.  And guess what folks? Even the kids like it.  No joke.  I can get my 12 month old to drink it straight- here is proof.

My 2 year old (the wild one) is a little trickier cause lets face it- who wants to drink something green and frothy (besides Shrek)?  So I mix his with plain yogurt and put blueberries in it and tell him it is blueberry yogurt.  It works about 50% of the time. Other times he is like “mom, this tastes like smoothie.”  You got me there buddy.  Sometimes if I add enough blueberries it turns purple and he is not so disgusted.

And there you have it.  All your fruits and veggies, phytochemicals, fiber, antioxidents, and nutrients in one drink!  Imagine if you had that for breakfast and then ate some fruits and veggies throughout the day too! You might start to look like this little lady

and how awesome would that be year round?
